The Gulf Jazz Society meets the first Monday of each month beginning at 7:00 pm at the St. Andrew's Civic Club, 2629 W. 10th St. (corner of 10th and Chestnut) in historic St. Andrews, Panama City, FL.  Any person interested in jazz is welcome to attend.

GJS MEMBERS APPEARING IN LOCAL VENUES.

SUNDAYS: Pianist Tom Hipps and Bassist Clark Marshall perform at the GRANITE CAFE every Sunday for Brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Also, Tom plays at 30 DEGREE BLUE at Bay Point every Friday and Saturday evening during dinner hours.

 
JAZZ GOULASH SET FOR MAY 19

You can listen to the endearing music of the Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra era in an intimate pub atmosphere on May, May 19 at Dado's on Grace St. in downtown Panama City.

Local musicians on the program are Suzanne Stewart (the songs of Peggy Lee) and Mike Stone (the songs of Frank Sinatra) pianist Tom Hipps, and bassist Steve Gilmore, and drummer Russ Dorr. Pub owner and vocalist Robin Dado promises to sit in as well.

The event, one of the GJS's monthly jazz outings, is billed as a "Jazz Goulash" that's because with the admission price of $8 for GJS members and $10 for others you get a bowl of Dado's special goulash. Dado's Cafe and Pub, located at 425 Grace Ave. features traditional American and European food.

The two-hour program begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available from Bob at 235-1659, Larry or Amy at 784-2106 or from Dado s at 215-1283.

JAZZ MARTINI NIGHT AT DADO'S

Dado's on Grace Ave. in downtown Panama City continues an Open Jam session on Thursday nights beginning at 6:00 p.m. Musicians of all skill levels are invited to sit in and play jazz. Dado s Cafe and Pub owner Robin Dado features a list of exotic martinis at a special Open Jam price. Tip jar proceeds go to the Gulf Jazz Society scholarship fund.

DIXIELAND CRUISE PLANS UNDERWAY FOR JUNE

Details are being worked out for a repeat of the successful Dixieland Cruise events held the last two summers on the Betsy Ann paddle wheeler. If plans fall in place the cruise will be held on Monday, June 16.
 

PIANO STUDENT MICHELE LE WINS GJS SCHOLARSHIP

 

Piano student Michele Le (seated) has won the $500 Tom and Cona Hipps scholarship. Joining her at the piano are (left) Scholarship Chairperson Amanda Matthews and GJS Board President Tom Hipps. The scholarship is funded by the Kay Hage Memorial Foundation.
 


 

 

 

LOCAL ARTIST WINS FESTIVAL POSTER COMPETITION

Local artist Porter Thrower has won the Gulf Jazz Society $200 prize for painting a montage of the Jazz-By-the-Bay festival site including familiar features of the historic St. Andrews community. The painting is shown at left as it will be reproduced on festival posters and t-shirts. The painting itself will be auctioned off at the Festival on Oct. 20th.
