Tom and Cona Hipps Scholarship

Qualifications: The Tom and Cona Hipps Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded annually by the Gulf Jazz Society to a successful applicant from the Panhandle Region of North Florida including the counties of Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Liberty, Calhoun, Washington, Holmes, Leon, Okaloosa and Walton. Applicants may be any student entering his or her junior year of high school in the year that the scholarship is offered, or a lifelong learning student. Any musician or vocalist seeking admission to a jazz study program or camp, for the pursuit of jazz education or jazz performance is qualified to apply.

Student applicants should have a recommendation from their music teacher and have a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average. Community service is helpful but not required. Cash disbursement will be made on proof of acceptance into a music program. Final decisions will be made by the Gulf Jazz Society Board of Directors upon recommendations from the Scholarship Committee.

Tom Hipps, Robert Hansford, and Amanda Matthews

The $500 Tom and Cona Hipps Scholarship for 2006 was awarded to Robert Hansford.  Hansford is a piano and composition student at Gulf Coast Community College who has applied at Berkeley School of Music and other top ranked music colleges to continue his music education.

The Tom and Cona Hipps Scholarship for 2005 was awarded to Raymond East, a jazz studies major at the University of North Florida.
